What is 1st Law?

1st Law was my (Nathan Cai) attempt to build a reliable and versatile robot that could use facilitate a large variety of weapon types. 1st Law is a simplified 3lb variant of DEISy Robotics' 2020 season BattleBots Submission, 3rd Law, and a functional iteration of failed 3lb 3rd Law, 0.3rd Lawette, which initially was to debut in the November 2021 NHRL event, but had fried the motors and ESCs at safety.

The goal of 1st Law was to be a proving platform for the chassis format and eventually be fitted with a counter-rotating flywheel to cancel out gyroscopic precession in later events. Once fitted with the flywheel, it would once again be scaled up to 250lbs for a later season of BattleBots, however, in the time since 1st Law has become a robot on its own.

Before the 1st Law

Before the 1st Law, there were 4 other robots: 2 unsuccessful 250lbs, 1 failed 3lb, 1 kit bot, 2 working 3lbs, and 1 robot that clearly violates OCSA regulations. The names of these other robots are:

  • 3rd Law (250lb)
    • 2020 Battlebots submission
  • Mike The Bike (250lb)
    • 2021 Battlebots submission (Do not question the name, forget it exists, and do not look up the submission video)
  • 0.3rd Lawette (3lbs)
    • November 2021 NHRL (Failed to complete in time)
  • Drumette (3lb)
    • Standard FingerTech Beater Bar
    • Drumette is the DEIS Robotics Club starter 3lb kit design. Derivates of this kit made my other members of the team include:
  • The Chort (3lb)
  • Indecisive Mess (3lb)
  • Walmart RC Car with DIY Tablesaw
